The Alabama Department of Education is the Montgomery-headquarted division of the State Government responsible for administering the public school system of Alabama. As of 2010, the Alabama State Department of Education was administered by Secretary and Executive Officer Joseph B. Morton, with other members of the State Board of Education administering the eight various districts of the State.

According to the set-up of the State Government, the current sitting Governor also functions as the State Board of Education President. The members of the State Board, meanwhile, bear responsibility for the appointment of the State Superintendent.

The Alabama Department of Education is based out of Montgomery. State Board of Education meetings are held in the facilities of the Gordon Persons Building.
