New York State Department of Education

The New York State Department of Education administers administrative and funding matters related to providing education throughout the State of New York. In contrast to many other U.S. Departments of Education, the NY State Department of Education can be distinguished, in part, in terms of its inclusion of the higher educational system of State-sponsored and funded colleges and universities.

As such, the New York State Department of Education is incorporated into the University of the State of New York, or SUNY, overall system. Thus, the NY State Department of Education does not just carry out the providing of functions related to the performance levels of public high schools, but also for colleges and universities, in addition to professional fields and public settings, such as libraries and museums, deemed to be of educational significance.

The New York State Department of Education administers the Office of Cultural Education, which has authority over such individual programs as the New York State Museum, New York State Library, New York State Archives, and Public Broadcasting Office. Another distinctive element of the New York State Department of Education is the Office for Non-Public Schools, which administers schools independent of the normal NY State Department of Education and schools of a religious nature.

The New York State Department of Education also administers the examinations required to be passed in order to secure a New York State Teaching License, such as a New York State Liberal Arts & Science exam, the Assessment of Teaching Skills Test- Written, and the applicable Content Specialty Test.
