The New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) is responsible for administering the country’s largest public school system and provides for concerns such as funding, compliance with standards, and proficiency testing in education institutions located in the five boroughs of New York City.
In this regard, the Department of Education in NYC bears the additional responsibility for some 1.1 million students receiving an adequate level of education. The overall administrative head of the Department of Education in NYC is the mayorally-appointed New York City School Chancellor, who, as of 2010, was Joel I. Klein. Joel Klein has been administering the New York City Department of Education since 2002.
The Department of Education in NYC is further responsible for the oversight of some 80,000 teachers, and as such, deals with union representation from the teachers’ unions of the United Federation of Teachers, the New York State United Teachers, and the American Federation of Teachers. A study of the financial burden represented by and shouldered by the Department of Education in NYC, as was carried out specifically toward the funds used in the 2007 period, found that the year’s operating budget was $17 billion.
Informational concerns in the New York City Department of Education are provided for through the Automate the Schools, or ATS, cataloging system. The Department of Education in NYC administers 1,450 separate schools in all. In addition to the immediate responsibilities of the New York City Department of Education, the Department is also considered to exercise a general influence on American education.
